PROGRAM / COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this workshop we will cover performance & theory of Tabla - language of Tabla, history of Tabla and different aspects of Tabla playing.

This workshop will cover mainly the points mentioned below

For Beginners:

  • How to keep hands on the Tabla

  • Basic compositions

  • Theory/ history of Tabla

  • How to recite the Tabla syllables

  • How to play basic Taals ( groove )

  • Last day of the workshop all kids will perform in front of their parents and friends.

For Intermediate & Advance Levels:

  • How to play Tabla compositions like Kaida , Rela , Tukda , Chakradhar

  • How to present Tabla solo

  • How to accomopany with singer / instrument / dancers etc

  • Hheory / history of Tabla

  • How to recite the Tabla syllables

  • How to play with Bhajans and folk songs 

  • Overall presentation.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR - AMIT KAVTHEKAR

Young and talented Amit Kavthekar (“GANDA-BANDH SHAGIRD” of Late Ustad Allarakha) has rhythm running in his veins. At the early age of six, he was being groomed in the art of playing tabla by the legendary Ustad Allarakha. He has also been fortunate enough to be taught tabla intricacies by Ustad Zakir Hussain - a maestro in Indian classical music an international phenomenon in the fields of percussion and world music.

Amit has played with many eminent Indian Classical Musicians such as Ustad Zakir Hussain and Sivamani on Zee TV in India, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan at Google Talks, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan at Berklee College of Music, Ustad Ashish Khan at Learnquest Festival at Regis College MA, Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta in Baithak, Boston MA, Pt. Kushal Das at MIT, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma  in his Documentary directed by Jabbar Patel in India, Pt. Jasraj in his vocal recital in Pune India and many others. Recently, Amit played at the United Nations Day Concert 2018 with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Bangash and Amaan Ali Bangash as well as with the Refugee Orchestra project.

Amit has frequent collaborations with western classical, jazz and fusion musicians - He is a member of the Purnalokha quartet along with David Balakrishnan of the grammy winning Turtle Island Quartet. He has also played with the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and is also a founder member of the band Sawaari, which explores music from different parts of the world. Recently, Amit started working with renowned and one of the best Jazz guitar player Al Di Meola and now he is the integral part of Al Di Meola acoustic trio Project. 

Amit is currently teaching Tabla in the New England School of Music based in Massachusetts. He also teaches master classes and workshops in universities.


Payment and Missed Class Policy:

Training requires consistency in order to achieve the most benefit. However, we understand that students may occasionally need to miss a class. Use the following guidelines to ensure that you get the most out of your classes at The Academy of Creative Arts. 

  1. Your fees are due on or before the first class in a month

  2. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card

  3. If you pay for several months in advance and cannot complete all months, we will refund months not used when notice is received before the beginning of the month

  4. If you or your child plan to miss a class - 48 hour advance notice is required - so another student can be accommodated - if the student does not provide 48 hour notice, student can coordinate the make-up class with the instructor.

  5. Your monthly fee pays for your space in class for the month. It is your responsibility to make up classes if you or your child miss the class.

  6. One makeup class will be offered each month. During any month that you are enrolled, you may make up a class by attending any other appropriate session (please coordinate with the instructor for scheduling the make up class). Make up classes should be completed within 60 days of missing the class. Fees for missed classes are not refundable.

  7. If you are having trouble scheduling a make up class, please let us know and we will try to accommodate you

  8. Class timings and schedule are subject to change
