INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC  

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

A fun and engaging introduction to the beautiful world of Indian classical music, designed especially for children. Students will develop basic musical awareness while exploring Swaras, Taal, Raga, rhythm, and Indian musical traditions through age-appropriate activities. 

Lesson Plan – 12 Weeks 

  1. Discovering Indian Music – Introduction to Swara, Sa Re Ga Ma, pitch & listening

  2. Finding Your Sa – Voice exercises, basic swara practice 

  3. Swaras & Simple Patterns – Alankar and basic melodic patterns 

  4. Understanding Taal – Beat, rhythm, clapping patterns & simple taal exercises

  5. Introduction to Raga – What is a Raga? Exploring a simple children's raga

  6. Singing a Bandish – Learning a simple composition 

  7. Voice & Expression – Sur, rhythm, pronunciation and musical expression

  8. Mini Performance – Review, practice and presentation for parents 

BOLLYWOOD MELODIES

THE INFLUENCE OF RAGA & INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Explore the magic behind timeless Bollywood songs and discover how Indian classical Ragas, melodies, rhythm, and musical traditions have shaped Hindi film music. Students will learn popular Bollywood classics while understanding the Raga-based melodies and musical ideas behind them. 

Lesson Plan – 12 Weeks 

  1. Introduction to Bollywood Music – How Indian classical music influenced Hindi film songs 

  2. What Makes a Melody? – Understanding melody, Swara, scale and musical phrases

  3. Raga & Bollywood – Discovering how different Ragas inspire popular film songs

  4. Learning Through Classics – Learning a Bollywood song and identifying its melodic elements 

  5. Raga to Film Song – Exploring examples of Raga-based Bollywood compositions

  6. Rhythm & Expression – Understanding Taal, beat, phrasing and emotional expression

  7. From Raga to Performance – Developing voice, pronunciation and expressive singing

  8. Bollywood Music Showcase – Performance and exploration of the Raga/melodic influences behind the songs. 

RABINDRA SANGEET & BENGALI MUSIC 

FROM RABINDRANATH TO BENGAL - A JOURNEY THROUGH BENGALI MUSIC

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

An enriching introduction to Rabindra Sangeet and the rich musical heritage of Bengal. Students will explore the poetry, melodies, cultural traditions, and musical styles that shaped Bengali music, while learning selected songs by Rabindranath Tagore and other influential Bengali composers and artists.

  2. Meet Rabindranath Tagore – His life, poetry and contribution to music

  3. Understanding Rabindra Sangeet – Style, melody, lyrics & expression

  6. Beyond Rabindra Sangeet – Introduction to Bengali modern and traditional songs

Tania Mishra (Pattanayak) is a distinguished Indian Classical (Hindustani) vocalist and dedicated educator with a lifelong passion for music. Born in West Bengal, India, she was introduced to the mesmerizing world of music at the age of seven. This early foundation blossomed into a vibrant career as she pursued both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music, specializing in Hindustani Classical Khyal, and earned the prestigious Sangeet Visharad title. 

Tania has had the profound privilege of receiving her musical education under the esteemed guidance of several masters, including Sri Jayanta Saha (disciple of the legendary Debabrata Biswas), Pandit Jayanta Sarkar (disciple of Pt. Jnan Prakash Ghosh), Vidushi Suranjana Bose, Vidushi Anusua Mukhopadhyay, and Pandit Koushik Bhattacharjee. 

An acclaimed performer, Tania has proudly represented India at the prestigious SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, eight countries) Festival. While her academic expertise is rooted in Khyal, her expansive repertoire showcases flawless versatility across Indian light classical, classic Bollywood, devotional music, folk, Rabindra Sangeet, and traditional Bengali songs. Throughout her career, both Tania and her students have won numerous accolades in national and international competitions. 

Before relocating to the United States in 2014, Tania served as a guest lecturer in an undergraduate college affiliated with Vidyasagar University. During her time in Mountain View, California, she was a faculty member at the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) and taught Indian Classical Music at Google Headquarters, alongside performing in numerous concerts and community programs in the Bay Area. Now based in Burlington, Massachusetts, Tania is thrilled to continue sharing her rich musical heritage and expertise with a new community of students. 

Teaching Philosophy "I believe music is a profound language that connects us deeply to our roots. My goal as an educator is to build a strong technical foundation while empowering each student to discover their unique artistic voice. Through a supportive and inspiring environment, I strive to help my students cultivate discipline, patience, and a lifelong joy for music."

  • Time slots for 1-1 sessions can be scheduled based on the availability of both student and teacher.

Payment and Missed Class Policy:

Training requires consistency in order to achieve the most benefit. However, we understand that students may occasionally need to miss a class. Use the following guidelines to ensure that you get the most out of your classes at The Academy of Creative Arts. 

  1. Your fees are due on or before the first day of the class and are charged on a monthly basis.

  2. Payment may be made by cash, check, credit card or recurring automatic payments

  3. If you pay for several weeks in advance and cannot complete all weeks, we will refund weeks not used when notice is received 48 hours before beginning of the week

  4. If you or your child plan to miss a class - 48 hour advance notice is required - so another student can be accommodated - if the student does not provide 48 hour notice and does not attend the session 50% of the fees will be refunded. If the student attends part of the program and misses the rest, the student will not be eligible for any refund.

  5. Class timings and schedule are subject to change

  6. If your child is disruptive and impacts the ability to learn for other students - we may request parents to un-enroll the child from the class for a safe and fun learning experience & environment for all the other students in the class.
