Main Dance Program Levels and Classes

Levels - Age will be used as a starting point if the student's ability is unknown, however, if the student displays the technical ability and aptitude to move into a higher level, it may be done at the instructor's discretion. Students can expect to remain in the same level for 2-3 years.

  • Level I/Beginner - ages 7-9 - This level is the first hour long class a student will take past the introductory and creative movement level that concentrates on one genre of dance.
  • Level II/Intermediate - ages 8-12
  • Level III/Intermediate - ages 11+
  • Level IV/Intermediate/Advanced ages 13+
  • Level V/Advanced - by instructor approval

Ballet
The traditional technique of classical ballet has developed over centuries. Taught through structured exercises at the barre and center, it is the foundation for all forms of dance encouraging students to increase focus, body awareness, balance, coordination, control, and concentration while building a graceful and healthy body with good posture.  All students are encouraged to take ballet.

PrePointe
A foot strengthening class that not only strengthens the muscles of the feet and legs, but teaches students correct alignment for better control and balance.  Although this class is geared toward the ballet dancer, students of all genres will benefit from taking this class.

Pointe
Dancing on pointe is the pinnacle of the classical ballet dancer's journey.  It is performed using special shoes designed specifically to dance on the tips of the toes for long periods of time.  Dancing on pointe requires strength and skill, so prior permission from instructor is required.  PrePointe is a pre-requisite for this class and it must be taken in tandem with pointe.  Students interested in taking pointe class must have been in PrePointe for at least 6 months, must be taking a minimum of one ballet technique class per week, and must be at least 13 years old.

Jazz
Students will explore various forms of this type of dancing including broadway, funk, and fusion.  Jazz dance uses a low center of gravity, isolations, and improvisation to express music and movement.

Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a combination of street, jazz, modern, and tribal styles. High energy moves are taught using a variety of upbeat music.  This fun and energetic form of dance is constantly changing with the wide variety of current music and is seen in almost every high school, college,
and professional dance team.

Tap
Tap combines study of rhythm, patterns, and syncopation in order to develop rhythm, agility, balance and coordination.

Modern
This class puts the emphasis on the torso rather than the feet.  Modern dance employs such elements as contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation.  Dancers will learn a fusion of Horton, Graham, and Duncan techniques.

Lyrical/Contemporary
Students in this class will learn to combine elements from ballet and jazz in order to express song lyrics.  Contemporary dance is a relatively new form of dance combining elements of jazz, and modern to any type of music.

Musical Theater
Combining new approaches like the popular TV series "Glee," traditional Broadway style choreography, and show-stopping stage presence with a focus on acting and learning song-and-dance numbers. This class includes singing, speaking, and dancing.

Conditioning
Conditioning for Dancers uses techniques from ballet, Pilates, and others to create a class that focuses on strengthening not only the core and feet, but the whole body.

Zumba®
Zumba® classes use hypnotic Latin and International rhythms and routines that feature interval training where fast and slow rhythms, and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.  It feels more like a PARTY than a workout!
