ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
SHUBRA CHANDRA
A little about my background. I have resided in Lexington, MA for 25 years and developed deep roots in the community due to my volunteer work on various nonprofit boards in Lexington, MA. Inclusion of new parents and students of color has been one of the primary achievements during my tenure on these boards. I have been volunteering in local non-profit organizations since 2005. Being a board member on Lexington Education Foundation (LEF) and Friends of Lexington Music and Arts, Drama Students (FOLMADS), has given me an understanding of how non-profit organizations are run and how fundraising and volunteer engagement are key to their functioning at a high level. I have also been a member of the Executive board of the Lexington High School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) since 2012 and was the President of the PTO from June 2017 until June 2019. Both my children attended Lexington Public Schools. I am currently on the Board of the Lexington Council for the Arts.
I have a Master’s degree in Clothing and Textiles with a specialization in women’s apparel design. My career has been in the fashion industry, with an extensive background in textiles, art, costume design, sourcing, garment design and working with international teams. I founded a sustainable, online fashion business in 2008, Shubhra Designs, LLC and www.shubrah.com. I have taught fashion classes at Framingham State University and the Peabody and Essex Museum (PEM), a class titled “Upcycling and Recycling Fashions”, in conjunction with the exhibit on Japanese designers. I also taught fashion art classes for middle and high school students via the Lexington Community Education (LCE) and Hayden Recreation. I realized there was an “art supplement” as part of the college applications when my older child was applying to colleges. She was looking for a liberal arts education, but always had an interest in photography and pottery as hobbies. I helped her create a portfolio for her photos, a website as well as by having an exhibition of her photos and pottery at the Cary Memorial Library. She got into NYU in 2016 and graduated this May. My son graduated LHS in 2019 and created voice videos for his “art supplement” as he was a singer. He took a gap year and will be attending Harvard College in Fall 2020. I realized through this process that colleges are looking for very specific “art supplements” to enhance the applications and get to know the applicant better.
